News from the Kariuki
Family in Chad
We’ve hit the ground
running with Moses sharing in church meetings and participating in
evangelization campaigns. We have seen much fruit already and are
excited to have the privilege of being part of what God is doing in the Sahel
and in Africa.
Open air evangelism in Sarh
Our graduates continue
to impact nations! In December, Moses flies to Marakal, South Sudan to
teach on a Discipleship Training School led by former student and staff. In
January, he will travel to Cape Town for a week to teach in the School of
Biblical Studies on the book of Revelation. This is very relevant with the turn
of events in eastern, northern & western Africa; "A call to trust
Jesus and perseverance!" Please pray for these two opportunities to invest
in others raising up missionaries in Africa.
Back home in Sarh, it is a joy to meet weekly
with some of our staff and prayerfully envision what God has in store
for YWAM Chad, specifically from the Sarh Campus. We are thankful for the fruit
of what has passed but we want MORE from the Lord!!!
The tropical rainy
season here in Chad was especially heavy this year, bringing floods that
displaced over 400,000 Chadians and destroyed their crops. Our own “Village des
Nations” YWAM campus construction has had to wait for waters to recede and open
access to our land, as the only access road to the property has been under
water.
Flooding in the Sahel
Thankfully, the waters
are going down and although we still have sporadic rains, the rainy season is
basically over, and we look forward to beginning construction. In
November we will start making bricks and in December begin constructing what
will be a Summer of Service Camp but serve as our preliminary base and housing
for next year's Discipleship Training School. We are so thankful for
ArchActive, the Architectural Firm that designed our buildings. Landscaping is
still a work in progress and we prayerfully hope to see a steady flow of
mission builders and resources in the coming months to help us realize this
project.
Home Sweet Home: On our return to Chad in the beginning of
August, we needed to find a place to live as a family, as we had given up our
rented home when we left last year, and put our belongings in storage. After
looking around, we met our former landlady who told us that our former home
would be available in mid-September, which was a big answer to prayer! The
children were so excited about getting “our” house back, and since we didn’t
find anything else we really liked, we decided to wait for it. We ended up
staying in our colleague Margaret’s (one bedroom!) house for 6 weeks, and were
very ready to finally be able to unpack and get settled. It was a stretching
transition back to life in Chad for all of us!! JoAnna has been very busy
unpacking and organizing our home besides restarting home school for the
Kariuki 4 ;) The kids are enjoying our dog Simba as well as climbing their
trees and running around the compound at recess. We are all excitedly
anticipating a trip to Kenya as a family for a few weeks over Christmas. The
children have grown and changed so much since our last time with the Kariuki
side of the family almost 4 years ago.
We have recently
welcomed Elin, a volunteer mission nanny, who has come for a year to help with
the children’s schooling. We’re so excited to have her, and blessed by her
willingness to serve the Lord by serving us as a family. Elin is a trained
teacher from Ohio, and feels like part of the family already!
Looking back on our time
on furlough, we are thankful for the many open doors where we were
received, refreshed and cheered on as we shared about the work in Chad, from
our pioneering days back in 2003, to our future plans and vision as a mission.
We are especially thankful for the many who expressed an interest to partner
with us in our work, by praying, giving or coming to help in construction and
other ministries.
Pray with us as we seek
to engage current challenges:
·
by joining the efforts
to rebuild and feed the needy according to our capacity
·
Find appropriate
equipment & laborers for brick making
·
Engage a builder for our
preliminary construction
·
Find cohesion with our
team after 18 months away
·
Raise funds for the
construction project.
