Deja Vu

The first weekend of May, in between two week-long seminars in Arusha, Tanzania, found Moses invited to the New Vision Masai church plant started by YWAM Arusha. It brought back memories of our outreaches in the Kenyan region in 1993/94. Our team back then planted three churches that have multiplied beyond our wildest expectations. My time was divided into 4 sessions; leaders, main service, women’s group and church elders. I was overwhelmed by the growth and vision that the Masai church exhibited. It has been baptized by fire but that only increased its tenacity and vision.

East Africa Blitz

Since our last news Moses has been to Uganda twice, once in Jinja with YWAM Staff leadership training and in Kampala teaching in a Discipleship Training School. Prior to that he spent two weeks at the coast of Kenya where he taught on Worldview in Shimba Hills, Kwale and on the Cost of Discipleship at Likoni, Mombasa. We are grateful for safe travel in a period of heavy rains. Working in Turkana, Kenya with "Bread of Life" Church Planting School, training missionaries dedicated to the unreached, was a dream come true. We have been praying for that mission in a difficult area which reminds us so much of Chad .

Family Life

Zachary is half way through his final year of high school, preparing for exams in November, and Marianna and Katelyn in 10th and 11th grades, are also beginning to think about what comes next. Prayers are appreciated for wisdom and open doors for them. Joshua is now half way through college, and is working on campus over the summer. We're so thankful for a live-in caregiver who has been helping Moses's mum, who is struggling with memory loss. Having someone with her at home, eating well, and getting good rest has made a big difference. Jo's dad has also recently recovered well from major surgery, and her grandad (who'll turn 100 this year) has had some health issues but is doing well, as well as a few other family members who are recovering from surgeries. We are so grateful for God our healer. Jo continues to enjoy studying community health, something that has long been on her heart, since she first came to Kenya 30 years ago. We remember her relentless trips working with malnourished children and taking mobile immunization clinics to the Orma community in Tana River, Kenya, over 25 years ago. It's a blessing to get more equipped for future opportunities. Prayer Points • In addition to teaching on cross-cultural ministry here in Kenya on a Community Development Training, Moses is heading back to Uganda for a DTS Alumni conference and a week of training with Titus Project, a School of Biblical Studies outreach. • Short Trip to PA in August; We have been praying for accommodation and cars and we thank God for some positive answers as we trust Him for more. Please pray with us for the finances for this trip and for lots of connections in the few short weeks we will be in the US. • Joshua is trusting God for some remote part time employment as he still doesn't have a car. We are thankful for what he has but he needs to make more $$$ Blessings, Moses & Jo PS: Sorry we dropped the ball on doing an email version of our last print update. We have linked PDF version of it for your reference below. PDF of previous print Update

International Adventure

We had two major outreaches in 2014 adding up to 5 months of students and workers on the field.  It was our first prolonged field service since we started and we are both stoked and a bit weary as a Team to say the least.  We are grateful to Him who makes it all possible and to you our faithful intercessors and partners.

OUTREACH MISADVENTURE
The unreached areas are exciting but challenging.  Many chose Jesus and others got deliverance and healing from varied oppression and bondage's.  One of our teams across in the neighboring country was arrested and detained for couple of hours.  After being grilled they were told that for security reasons they cannot proceed.  They ended up sharing the gospel with the police who provided transport back to next major town.  That particular team was composed of teachers, church elders and a pastor.  Since then one of the teachers also has an acting pastoral role of a church.  We pray that they will make a difference in the Education arena.

FAMILY ADVENTURE
Our family also has had an international adventure as we traveled stateside and visited family, friends and partnering churches.   Highlights included Moses and Jo participating in N. Africa YLeadership consultations and Staff conference in which our co-worker Elie was able to participate.  Moses led workshops on Pioneering and development.

MISADVENTURE IN SPAIN
A misadventure we had was the loss of Moses travel documents in Torremolinos at the hotel where we stayed noted on departure day.  We searched and asked in every possible nook and cranny but to no avail.  Some Co-workers in the region gave towards some of the unexpected expenses understanding that ticket and conference charges had stretched us thin.  Moses thinks it was Gods way to renew his heart for Europe.
Time spent in Madrid the capital in pursuit of emergency travel documents landed him in the midst of an international Gay Parade.  Lots of Goths and Wicans were prowling the streets at night.  On one night at the hotel a tormented child kept him awake from 10pm to 3am when he decided to pray and the child kept quiet after 5 mins of prayer.
Spiritual darkness covers the land and the need to engage in love and prayer to push it back is tangible and there are few laborers on the frontlines.

MINISTRY ADVENTURE
Back in the US we had two Seminars on Identity at two locations inspired by the outreach teams that served us so well earlier this year from Encounter Church & Harvestview Fellowship.  What a joy to be able to see the same transformation we see continually in the Sahel also happen with the beloved in Lancaster County, PA
We returned to Chad and hit the ground running with teaching on DTS and construction.   Moses then flew to Chicago to teach a perspective on World Missions Course and participate as one of the speakers in a C3 Missions conference.  We  are humbled by God's blessings & presence at all those meetings.

EURO ADVENTURE
One of Moses long standing desires is to visit and encourage missionaries we have been privileged to train on the field.  We had been able to do that Stateside and in different Africa Locations but not Europe.   This November he was able to do some Pastoral visits in France, visit former students in Switzerland and catch up with friends in Germany & Austria.  There were occasions to minister to families and a church Bible study in Both Germany and Austria.  There is still Asia and in particular India to visit and see what God is doing with former students and colleagues.  We had the joy of visits by both our missionary to India & our missionary to CAR...

Back in Sarh we graduated a Bible Core Course  just before Christmas and the 2 graduating students were exemplary.   We had over 200 hundred people come celebrate in our unfinished hall.  Step by step we are moving forward but continually need prayers.

Prayer Points
  • Our staff are recruiting for next year's February DTS and July Summer Crossroads DTS and need volunteer logistics staff, school staff and of course students to prepare for the harvest.
  •  Margaret our valued nurse and staff member who led the BCC school has left to go study SBS 2 & 3, we will miss her but bless her time of furlough and study.
  • Our construction has slowed down a bit since the rains and hasn't picked up yet.  We need to buy a truckload of gravel and 20000 bricks for our fourth building.
  • Our contractor is a plaintive at the justice and needs time to sort it out before he can be fully available again.
  • Our neighboring nations all have internal conflict related to fundamentalists... we have just finished the 4th year with no civil conflict in Chad.  May God help us to make the most of what we have in sharing the Gospel and overflowing beyong our borders with peace that passes Human understanding.

Facing The Giants

News from The Kariuki family
November 2011

“The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” Psalm 37:23

After a wonderful and very full summer, we are all happy to be back in PA and to a somewhat more ‘normal’ routine. The kids are enjoying school and doing well with their new teachers and classmates. It is a good furlough and we are grateful to have this time of refreshing, renewing, and the perspective that distance brings. We continue to look ahead, though, to what God has in store for us when we move back to Chad next year. The children miss our Chadian family and friends, our dog Simba, the many trees around our house that they love to climb, and the fresh tropical fruit from the garden. Moses can hardly wait for God’s time to start construction and move into the next phase of our inheritance. It has been amazing to see how many skilled workers are willing to come serve... We are praying for a specific time frame, and for the materials and finances to come through.

Coming up – In early November Moses will be taking a trip to Zimbabwe with friends Rodney, David & Jody to speak at the YWAM South Central Africa Regional Conference. It will be on "Facing the Giants in Africa; HIV, Poverty, Poverty Mentality in ministry, Corruption, & Witchcraft." Missionaries & Leaders from and to the nations of Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe will be attending. Please pray with us for every conceivable breakthrough both in the lives of attendees and our own lives... We are yearning for an encounter with God. After the conference in Zimbabwe, Moses heads to Katlehong, South Africa to visit Pastor Mtanyelwa and “The Agape Family Church”, before a week in Pretoria with precious friends, the Groblers, and at the Bible School they lead. In Pretoria he also hopes to have fruitful time with the architectural firm helping us with the “Village Des Nations” Campus designs followed by a trip to YWAM Muizenberg where Moses both studied and taught Biblical Studies. The South Africa itinerary will end in Durban with good friends the Thoms. After South Africa he will have some family time in Kenya, before returning to the US.

We’re excited about the many opportunities to share about Chad, preach and teach on this trip, but it will be a long time of separation for our family, so we are very aware of need for grace and protection for us all. Please pray for that as you pray for inspiration and strength.
(Travel dates for Moses are Nov. 4th to Dec.13th)
Prayer points:
• Pray for continued refreshing and open doors for us during our time in the US
• Pray for Moses’s trip – strength and anointing for him as he has many speaking/teaching engagements, special grace for the family at home, and for provision of his airfare and other travel costs.
• Pray for our coworkers in Chad as they continue the work there!

Love,
Moses, Jo Joshua, Zachary, Marianna & Katelyn
